The Shark Basin
Blue Water Diving Center opened another shark concentration site to divers in the northern island in 2006 when all the sharks deserted the site known as the shark pit near Flat Island.
For a long time kept secret as to protect the sharks from fishermen and indelicate divers, this dive site has been revealed to the public when the National Geography documentary shot the film on this dive site in 2008.
Actually a similar dive site Called “The Shark Pit” was situated at the foot of « Pigeon Rock » or « Sugar Loaf » near Flat Island. This dive site had a concentration of more than 40 sharks regularly oxygenating inside the pit, but unfortunately has been completely destroyed by sports fishers and anglers just for fun in December 2006. Since then, the sharks have completely deserted the site.
The new dive site is located in a place with lots of waves and surge called the Shark Basin at 12 meters depth.
The cruise from Trou aux Biches to the Shark Basin is around 2h30mn.
When a dive trip is organized to this place, it includes a nonrefundable 2 tank dive package and meal.
Although it is not a deep dive, we insist that all divers must have at least 30 registered dives and has recently dived to be eligible to participate.
We also insist to see the diver on a normal dive before taking them there. We appreciate that divers do not insist on these conditions.
Sometimes a first dive is made on the site called Nab Reef, a steep wall going from the surface down to 60 meters.
Sometimes one of the 2 dives is made on a location called the Shark Cathedral, an exhilarating dive site where sometimes few sharks can be observe too.
Huge trevalies and even sometimes sailfish can be observed there.
All the dives there are stunning and the water crystal clear. Divers must be very careful as the current can be very strong.
Definitely on of the best dive site in Mauritius that is unfortunately not always accessible because of the state of the sea.
