Whale watching - Humpback whales

We offer seasonal humpback and sperm whale trips. We meet at the centre at 07:00 and return to the centre between 13:00 and 15:00 depending on the distance travelled.

The price for the whale watching trips is 80 euros.

The price includes a cold meal, soft drinks and water and fruit. The centre also provides snorkelling equipment when it is possible to stop near the reef flats for a short relaxation on the way back.

Sightings take place in August and especially in September when the calves are born and the mothers are more stable.

It is then possible to see mothers and calves on the surface performing jumps (breaches) and a beautiful choreography with their pectoral fins or caudal fins beating the air.

Booking Conditions : Bookings without a deposit will not be considered. Cancellations within 48 hours are not refundable. We are sorry to impose strict payment conditions on bookings. This is to ensure that those who have booked and travelled early in the morning, sometimes from the other side of the island, will still be able to get out, even if they cancel.

The price for humpback whale watching is 80 euros per person

Humpback whales migration in Mauritius occurs between April and October.

                         It is then possible to sea mothers and calves on the surface or jumping out of the water.

Whale watching - Sperm whales

Between November 29 and December 07 2014, Blue Water Diving Center collaborated with  Marine Megafauna Conservation Organisation (MMCO) and its partners to the tagging of sperm whales off the West coast of Mauritius in order to study this population of resident sperm whales.

A population of female Sperm whales is resident off the South and West coast of Mauritius

The best months to observe them are February through April although it is possible to see them all year around if the weather conditions are good.

In November the sea is calm but the big males are here for mating and therefore the sperm whales are very mobile and cover large distance during the day.

The big males stay in Mauritius usually until March; the calves are born the next year (16 months gestation time)

 

Regulation on Whale Watching

As of November 1st 2012, the Whale and Dolphin Act has been implemented to regulate the observations and interactions with the Cetaceans (whales and dolphins):

  • The observation of the Cetaceans must be respectful to the animals in order NOT to stress or hurt them

  • The approach must be done at slow speed, on the side and at distances between 100 and 300 meters

  • Water entry is NOT permitted except for scientific studies, education or media goals with the authorisations of the Authorities. Only specialised NGO can obtain these authorisations

  • All interactions with the Cetaceans must stop at noon (12h00)

  • The number of persons on a boat is controlled and depends on the size of the boat.
